How does this calcium supplement compare to oyster shells?Updated 20 days ago

Oyster shells are a widely known source of calcium for chickens, however there are some notable differences between Grubbly Farms Calcium compared to oyster shells.

Efficiency:
Grubbly Farms Calcium Supplement is a form of calcium carbonite (naturally occurring aragonite) rather than calcite (oyster shells). Aragonite is the most efficient calcium source available for chickens because the crystalline structure is easier for hens to absorb and use, which is crucial for strong eggshells.

Sustainability:
Aragonite is sustainably mined from sedimentation processes that are naturally and consistently forming in the Bahamas. It’s also carbon negative, so harvesting removes more carbon from the air than the processing emits. Oyster shell collection can lead to ecosystem disruption.

Purity and Non-Animal Based:
Aragonite is non-animal based, reducing the risk of contamination with marine borne pathogens. It’s also naturally very pure because it is mined from marine deposits. Oyster shells can vary in quality as a by-product of the food industry.

Preferred Taste:
Aragonite has a more neutral taste compared to oyster shells, which can be too salty or fishy for some of your pickier ladies.
