Why are Grubbly feeds made without fish, soy, or corn?Updated 17 days ago

Why not use fishmeal?

Grubbly feeds are made with sustainably grown black soldier fly grubs - a powerhouse protein that's better for them, and the planet. Our grubs are sustainably and naturally harvested (no hormones, pesticides, or funky byproducts). Plus, chickens naturally forage for insects and plants, so Fresh Pecks feeds are filled with grubs, vegetables and whole grains so we can nourish our fluffy one with foods they naturally love.

Why no soy?

Grubbly Farms' mission is to create superfoods for pets and be a superhero for the planet, which means your feathered and fluffy friends’ wellness comes first with our feeds. This means we don’t use soy in any of our products because it can cause health concerns for poultry, pets, and people with soy allergies.

Soy also has been proven to be harmful to the environment. If soy isn’t always the best ingredient, why is it one of the most common forms of protein found in chicken feeds? It’s inexpensive to grow and protein-dense.

However, according to research presented in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, chickens fed a soy-based diet have less diversity in their gut bacteria, which increases food-borne pathogens and reduces overall health.

Additionally, soybean farming has had a negative impact on the environment, including: Excessive greenhouse gases, Deforestation of critical habitats including the Amazon Rainforest and degradation of water quality, Toxic chemical leaching into rivers, lakes, estuaries, and aquifers, Soil erosion, degradation, and compaction.

Why corn-free?

Grubbly feeds use only the highest quality fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and corn doesn’t live up to our standards.

While many poultry feed companies use yellow dent corn as a way to cheaply increase the calorie content in their feeds, yellow dent corn does not provide the nutritional value that high-quality ingredients offer.

Here’s why: Corn is high in calories but low in nutrients. Dent corn doesn’t provide laying hens enough protein. It is low in calcium and omega-3 fatty acids. Corn is also filled with empty carbs which can lead to obesity
